2026: US warns Iran infrastructure strikes possible if no nuclear deal reached
US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the U.S. military is ready for strikes if Iran does not return to its commitments under the nuclear agreement.
"If they don't come back into compliance, we're ready to go. We're ready to go," Trump told Fox News on Sunday.
Trump said he was open to negotiations with Iran if Tehran agrees to return to the 2015 nuclear accord that he has called the "worst deal ever."
"We're open to negotiations, but only if they agree to come back into compliance," he said. "If they're willing to come back into compliance, that's a very different situation."
The U.S. is also seeking to reassert its leadership role in the region, and Trump said his administration would not allow Iran to become the leading player there.
"We're not going to allow Iran to become the leader of the region," he said. "We have to be the leader of the region."
The Trump administration has been seeking to renegotiate the nuclear agreement, which was brokered by the U.S., the United Kingdom, France, Germany, China, Russia, and the European Union.
Trump has said he has concerns about the agreement's provisions, particularly the limits on Iran's nuclear enrichment program, but his administration is also concerned about Iran's support for terrorism and its ballistic missile program.
Trump has been under pressure to renegotiate the deal from lawmakers and the Israeli government, which has been wary of Iran's growing influence in the region.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the United Nations General Assembly on Sunday that the nuclear accord was "a historic mistake" that was bad for Israel, the West and the Middle East.
"The agreement was a historic mistake, and it was a mistake that could have been avoided," Netanyahu said.
"We want to make sure that Iran, in the future, will be a peaceful nation, and we want to make sure that the nuclear deal will not be a model for any other country that wants to develop nuclear weapons," he said.
Netanyahu also called for the U.S. to use its leverage to press Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions and to reject attempts to undermine the agreement.
"We have to use all the tools at our disposal
